MFCS Sponsors 2015 Clean Snowmobile Challenge

The SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge is a college engineering student design competition. Teams from participating universities compete within the rules and scoring to make production snowmobiles quieter, cleaner and more fuel-efficient. The 2015 edition of the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge was held from March 2-7, 2015 at the contest’s permanent home, the Keweenaw Research Institute, just north of the Michigan Technical University Campus in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

MFCS celebrated its second year of sponsoring the event and awarding the winning gasoline division team possession of The MacLean-Fogg Cup, and a $1,000 prize. MFCS volunteers were on hand each day of the event assisting organizers and working with students.  The competition is limited to twenty teams. One team traveled from as far away as Finland, but the majority of the schools participating were within close proximity to MFCS operations. Participating schools included Michigan Tech, Kettering, Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin-Platteville, Northern Illinois, Iowa State, SUNY Buffalo, and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Throughout the week, the competition snowmobiles are subjected to noise tests, emissions tests, performance tests, and endurance tests. The students must also submit an SAE quality design paper about their innovations, and present their innovations. For the students, the event is a great opportunity to develop their engineering, creative, and collaboration skills. During the Milwaukee Section SAE meeting held on Thursday the 5th, and attended by the students, the MFCS Quality Director gave the audience an overview of MFCS and the company’s quality processes.

At the contest’s final awards presentation on Saturday the 7th, The MacLean-Fogg Cup was awarded to the overall gasoline division winner, the University of Wisconsin – Madison. MFCS management representatives were on hand in Madison on March 26th to present the team with a $1,000 award and their name on The MacLean-Fogg Cup. Congratulations to all participating teams. We look forward to continuing our partnership next year.
